I came across Grayson Perry and although he's not a collage artist I found his work really interesting. He's usually known for creating large pots and sculptures but delved into making tapestries.
He created a series of 6 tapestries exploring taste and class. Garyson created 3 hour long episodes for Channel 4 enititled 'All the best in possible taste with Grayson Perry'. Each episode explored taste and the three different classes; working, middle and upper. He visited people in their homes, photographed sentimental items, attended special events and sought to understand what constitutes good taste with their self-defined classes. He then designed the tapestries which were then woven on huge looms in Belgium.
What I really enjoy about his work is that his tapestries are like a modern social documentary - as they were long ago - and I feel that this can be said for collage too. Some collages can be a visual documentation of something that is currently happening or has happened. It doesn't necessarily have to be created out of thin air. I find that I always make collages better when I have a storyline to work from, it usually happens to be book related but seeing Grayson's work has made me think about how I can apply collage to other areas that can make a connection with people.
